Sometimes I create something withe the main intent to give them away, in this case it was a set of shot glass flights made out of oak and poplar that you see above.

As with most wood projects it all starts with some gluing and cutting things to size. since I knew what I was looking to make I wanted to make I wanted to make sure that it was enough material to hold 12 shot glasses when all was said and done, and I was too lazy to use math.

Then it was time to create the basic layout of the flights themselves, and make sure the design layout looks okay. Overall I think the design works for the basic shape and design.

After the basic layout was done, it was time to add a little flair to the designs, to refine the flights a bit, and give them a more finished design. I am seriously really enjoying the little Ryobi edge router and the convenience of using it overall.

I decided to add a bevel all the way around the flights to make it a bit easier for people with smaller hands to pick them up, and have something to hold on to. After all the routing it was some to the sanding phase. Since I was not planning to stain these I sanded them down as smooth as possible.

Once the layout and sanding was completed it was time to start putting some finish on the flights, in this case I’m using some linseed oil on them. Since they will be around liquid, I decided an oil based finish would work best.

A few coats of linseed oil later, and a nice coat of wax finished them out. I also added some felt pads on the bottom to protect the surface this guys sit on. The person I made them for really liked them in the end.
